Architect Louis Kahn (Griffin Dunne) reluctantly takes on a country home for a tenacious businessman, sparking an unlikely friendship and a project that challenges both men to reconsider how they want to live.

In 1971, celebrated Philadelphia-based architect Louis I. Kahn (Griffin Dunne) is designing monumental buildings around the world, teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, and watching some of his grandest visions stall or take on lives he never intended. The last thing he needs is another project, particularly a country house. But young father Steve Korman (Ben Rosenfield) won’t take no for an answer. Kahn eventually accepts the commission, returning to residential architecture for the first time in years and beginning an unexpected friendship that spans his life’s final chapter. Before designing a single room, he challenges Steve to answer a deceptively simple question: How does he want to live? As they search for an answer together, the house becomes a testing ground for Kahn’s belief that architecture begins with understanding the people who will inhabit it. Their collaboration also brings the aging architect face-to-face with his own complicated ideas about work, family, and the legacy he will leave behind. Filmed amid the Philadelphia-area buildings that shaped Kahn’s remarkable career and featuring an excellent supporting cast that includes Alexis Bledel and Jennifer Beals, Max Korman’s period drama finds an intimate human story within the spaces we create and the lives that ultimately give them meaning.
